When buying a TV, we often see that the TV adopts an edge-type backlight (ELED backlight) or a direct-type backlight (DLED backlight). What are these so-called backlight concepts, and what impact do they have on TV performance?

The role and classification of backlight

From the light-emitting principle, LCD TV (also known as LED backlight TV, commonly known as LED TV) is composed of a light source and a transparent panel with a picture. The transparent panel itself does not emit light, and imaging requires another vital component-the backlight. When the picture of the transparent panel changes and the light source provides light for it, we can see a dynamic and beautiful picture. LED LCD TVs use LED light as the TV's backlight, providing stable brightness and color performance.

LED backlight usually has two classifications. First, according to the color of the light source emitted by the LED, it is divided into two types: white light LED backlight and RGB-LED backlight. Generally, TVs on the market use cheaper white light LEDs. Second, according to the incident position, it can be divided into two categories: direct type and side type. This is also the way to distinguish the widely used backlight source.

The concept of direct and side entry

The direct type is to arrange the LED light-emitting die evenly behind the liquid crystal panel as the light-emitting source, so that the backlight can be evenly transmitted to the entire screen, and the screen details are more delicate and realistic. The advantage is that it can set different backlight module power and responsibility areas. In theory, each LED can emit light independently to control the brightness. However, due to cost issues, it is actually set multiple areas to allow these areas to independently adjust brightness and darkness. degree.

The side-entry LED backlight is to arrange the LED dies on the periphery of the LCD screen, and then match the light guide plate, so that when the LED backlight module emits light, the light emitted from the edge of the screen is transmitted to the central area of the screen through the light guide plate. . There are two advantages of the side-type LED backlight. One is that it can use fewer LED dies, saving costs, and the other is that it can create a thinner and lighter body, so that the rear of the LED-backlit TV LCD panel does not need to be configured. The LED module is placed on the side to reduce the overall thickness of the screen, creating a thinner model than the direct-lit LED backlight LCD TV.

Side-lit backlit TV body is thinner

Inadequate, although the thickness of the edge-type LED backlight TV is thin, the number of LED dies used is relatively small, and the light is sent to the screen through the light guide plate, which will cause the edge of the LED TV. The screen brightness is brighter than the center of the screen, and the edge area of the screen will be hotter than the middle of the screen.

Direct-lit backlit TV has a thicker body

The cost of side-type LED backlight is relatively low, so most of the current mainstream adopts, that is, the so-called ultra-thin LED TV. For the average home user, the side-lit LED backlight can already meet their image quality experience needs. However, for mid-to-high-end users and audio-visual enthusiasts who have higher requirements for picture quality, the disadvantages of side-lit backlights are a bit unacceptable. For them, direct-lit backlights are more suitable.
